On December 27, 1979, the Superstition Mountain Historical Society was formed. The first temporary board was established in January of 1980. The Superstition Mountain Historical Society received both its Certificate of Incorporation from the state of Arizona and its 501(c)(3) Nonprofit status in March of 1980. At its annual meeting in June of 1980, a permanent board was established.

In 1981, the first quarterly journal was published, and in 1984, the Historical Society began printing annual journals.

The Historical Society has gradually amassed a large collection of memorabilia, artifacts and minerals.

The Society acquired a large collection of mining ore cars and Phelps Dodge donated sixty tons of historic mining equipment, including several train engines.
